2/5/25: Legend of Tapachula
Hey guys! It's been an awesome week! I hope you all had a great one too!
This week instead of running over what we did, I wanted to share the story of a good friend of ours I met here on the mission. His name is Luis. His story is inspiring to me, so I figured I'd share it.
Luis is a legend. He is probably one of the best people walking on the planet today. I'll explain. He's a member from Venezuela who converted to the church when he was about 16 years old. He served a mission in Venezuela and later served in various other callings in his time as a member in his home country. About a year ago he and his family wanted to go the states so they filled out all the legal paperwork to do so, and it ended up working out for all but him. He stayed back to figure out what had gone wrong while his family went off to the states.
After trying and failing various times he decided to go through with waiting for the CBP 1 appointment and journeying to Mexico. He came through "la selva" (the jungle) and managed his way to Tapachula, as most immigrants do. He's been here for about 4 months and has made a great impact on the members here. Since the CBP 1 appointments are now offline, he now is looking for other ways to legally enter the country so he can be with his family again.
I'm super shocked and in awe of how good of a person Luis is and how actively he serves others. He has such a solid foundation in Christ and the Gospel, he isn't swayed, even in his hardest of moments. He is in the perfect situation to sit and shake his fists at God in anger of why things aren't working out for him. But instead of looking in and taking pity on himself he looks outward and helps other people in anyway he can. He is the most invested member in a stake and country that isn't even his own. But he continues to serve the Lord in everyway possible.
His testimony in the restored gospel is awesome, and it's great to see the teachings so well put in action. It goes to show that humility really is the deciding factor of our happiness or our suffering.
Bringing me to the Scripture of the Week, Alma 37:33-34. They're instructions from Alma to his son Helaman in what and how to teach.
"33 Preach unto them repentance, and faith on the Lord Jesus Christ; teach them to humble themselves and to be meek and lowly in heart; teach them to withstand every temptation of the devil, with their faith on the Lord Jesus Christ.
34 Teach them to never be weary of good works, but to be meek and lowly in heart; for such shall find rest to their souls"
I love the teachings because they really show us what we ourselves should focus on when we hear and recieve instruction from the Lord and His servants. They tie in because Luis is a great example of a follower of these teachings!
Anyway, that's what I wanted to share today. Remember that miracles do happen and to be like Jesus! Hasta luego! (By the way for transfers I stayed in Tapachula with Elder Ricks for another one).
